DKMS Chile is thrilled to announce the inauguration of its first collection center in Santiago de Chile on January 25, marking a significant step in enhancing stem cell collection as well as transplant capacity in the country and improving access to treatment for patients in need. This is a unique project in Chile, as it is the first facility dedicated exclusively to peripheral stem cell collection.
The establishment of this center will double the country's annual collection capacity, a crucial advancement in our mission to lower barriers to transplantation, particularly for the Hispanic-Latin American population. Since our launch in Chile in 2018, we've already seen a remarkable increase in a patient's chances of finding a matching unrelated donor, rising from 30% to 50%.
With the new center, we will be able to double the country's annual collection capacity. This is a very important step in our efforts to lower the barriers to transplantation, especially for the Hispanic-Latin American population. Since we started in Chile in 2018, a patient's chances of finding a matching unrelated donor have already increased from 30% to 50%.
With increasing requests for DKMS donors from Chile for patients in the country and worldwide, existing collection capacities in the country have been stretched. The opening of our collection center will ensure a timely response to transplant centers' requests, ensuring that patients receive the treatment they need, when they need it.
This achievement underscores our commitment to saving lives and offering hope to those in need, and we are immensely proud to continue our journey towards a better future for blood cancer patients.
