Over the past three decades, DKMS has grown to become an international and multifaceted organization, one that is able to fight life-threatening blood diseases from many different angles by employing a wide range of programs and services. Access To Treatment (ATT) complements DKMS’ activities in donor recruitment, science and research by addressing another crucial challenge: ensuring that more patients can access the treatment they need.
We firmly believe that giving as many patients as possible a second chance at life requires a holistic approach. Access To Treatment offers several programs for low- and middle-income countries and collaborates with non-profit organizations who are pursuing the same cause. While stem cell transplantation remains a core focus of our work, we increasingly support the entire patient journey: from creating the conditions needed for treatment to follow-up care.
We believe it is crucial to remove both socio-economic and infrastructural barriers so that more patients are able to access potentially lifesaving therapy. At DKMS, we are committed to alleviating these barriers and continuously strive to find new ways to facilitate access to treatment and save as many lives as possible.
Our activities to facilitate access to treatment cover three main areas:
The DKMS Patient Funding Program aims to lessen financial barriers to transplantation by contributing to treatment costs for patients who would otherwise not receive treatment.
The DKMS Free HLA Typing Program supports the identification of suitable family donors by covering HLA typing costs for patients in need of a transplant and their family members. We also support unrelated donor searches for patients who do not find a suitable family donor.
The DKMS Capacity Building Program advances treatment and care through infrastructural support and knowledge sharing. This includes supporting treatment capacities as well as the training and education of healthcare professionals.
